Tip calculator
The tip, the total and everyone's share, exact to the cent, with the rounding left up to you.
Tip & split
- Bill
- $86.40
- Tip (18.06%)
- $15.60
- Total to pay
- $102.00
Each of the 4 people pays $25.50. Rounding makes the tip 18.06% instead of 18%.
How the split works
The tip is a percentage of the bill, or of the bill before tax if you tick that box. Add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people.
Total = bill + bill × tip ÷ 100, and each share = total ÷ people
Example: an $86.40 bill with an 18% tip is $15.55 of tip and $101.95 in all, which is $25.48 or $25.49 each for four people. Rounding each share up to the next 50 cents makes it $25.50 each and $102.00 in all, and the tip becomes 18.06%.
Splitting to the cent
A total rarely divides evenly. Rather than round everyone up and overpay, the calculator says exactly who pays the extra cent, so the shares add up to the total. Tipping customs differ a lot between countries and services, so the percentage is yours to choose.
Questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
That is up to you. Tick "Tip on the amount before tax" and enter the tax shown on the bill to work the tip out on the pre-tax amount, which gives a slightly smaller tip.
Why do some people pay a cent more?
So the shares add up exactly to the total. $101.95 between four is $25.4875 each, which can't be paid, so three people pay $25.49 and one pays $25.48.
Can I split unevenly, for different meals?
Not here: this calculator splits equally. For separate meals, work out each person's subtotal first and tip on that.
