# Percent off calculator

25% off, $15 off, "half price": type the price and the discount to see what you'll pay and what you save, with the other usual sale percentages alongside.

## How percent off works

A discount percentage is a share of the original price. Multiply the price by the percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving; the sale price is what's left.

Sale price = original price × (1 − percent off ÷ 100)

Example: 25% off $80 is 80 × 0.25 = $20 off, so you pay $60. The quick way to the sale price is to multiply by what's left: 80 × 0.75 = $60.

### Percent off or money off?

Switch to "Amount off" for coupons like "$15 off" and the calculator shows the percentage they're worth, so you can compare them with a percentage offer. $15 off $80 is 18.75%, so a 20% coupon beats it at that price; on a $60 basket the same $15 is worth 25% and wins.

## Questions

**How do I work out a discount in my head?**

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left ($80 becomes $8), then multiply: 20% is two lots ($16) and 30% is three ($24). For 25% take a quarter, and for 50% halve it.

**How do I compare a percentage coupon with a money-off one?**

Switch the discount to amount off and enter the coupon: the result shows the percentage it is worth on that price. The bigger percentage wins, and a fixed amount off counts for less the more you spend.

**Why might the till be a cent different?**

Prices are rounded to whole cents, and a shop may round each item separately, so a basket can differ by a cent or two from one calculation on the total.

**Is anything I type saved?**

Only the currency you choose, in your browser's local storage on this device. Prices are never sent anywhere.
